Stress Management information and faq

Stress is designed to help us
In moments of stress, the body temporarily pauses repair and recovery functions, channeling all energy into the “fight or flight” response so we can respond quickly and effectively to a challenge.  Ideally, once the stressful event passes, the body returns to normal. But when stress becomes chronic, that return to balance doesn’t happen—and that’s when it starts to take a toll on your health.

Chronic stress
Chronic stress comes from prolonged, ongoing stress that repeatedly activates the body’s stress response. It can also arise from mentally replaying or dwelling on a stressful event or perceived stress over and over again in your mind.

The physical and emotional impacts of stress
Physical sensations:
  • Muscles may be tense, especially in the neck and shoulders
  • Feeling like you're carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders
  • A knot in the stomach and digestive issues are possible
  • The heart may race, and you may feel jittery
  • Exhaustion and difficulty sleeping are often experienced
Emotional responses:
  • Overwhelm may be felt
  • Feeling suffocated by everything
  • Constant worry and anxiety about everything are possible
  • Irritability and frustration may occur
  • Concentration and decision-making may be difficult

How does daily stress affect your physical health?
Chronic or daily stress affects all systems of the body.  Including the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive systems.
  • Chronic stress causes muscle tension and strain in the musculoskeletal system.
  • In the Respiratory system it can cause shortness of breath, rapid breathing or other more severe respiratory problems.
  • Chronic stress takes a toll on the bodies cardiovascular system manifesting as issues related to the heart, blood vessels, blood pressure, hypertension, increasing risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • The endocrine system releases a host of hormones including cortisol which most people know as the “stress hormone”. The continuous release of stress hormones is linked to chronic fatigue, diabetes, obesity, depression, and immune disorders.
  • The gastrointestinal system is the gut, esophagus and stomach. Chronic stress can cause many problems in the gut and bowels such as ulcer, irritable and inflammatory bowel problems, celiac and GERD. Stress can cause us to crave more food, different foods or even less food. Heartburn, acid reflux, pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation can also occur from stress.
  • You may have heard of the gut-brain connection. This is a two-way signaling system between the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system. This is where the brain comes in as well as mental health and mood. Chronic stress can affect brain health, and our mood as well as our ability to think clearly through the gut-brain connection.
  • Chronic stress also affects both male and female reproductive systems, affecting testosterone, libido and menstrual cycles.

In layman's terms chronic stress can show up as any combination of the following:
In the body
as headache, heartburn, insomnia, rapid breathing, week immune system, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, diabetes, obesity, intestinal problems, diarrhea, constipation, digestive problems, stomachaches, nausea, vomiting, low sex drive, tense muscles, body aches, osteoporosis, back & shoulder pain.
In your mental & emotional health as depression, irritability, anxiety, restlessness, brain fog, memory problems, feeling overwhelmed, anger, sadness.
In lifestyle problems and behaviors such as overeating, weight gain, exercising less, avoiding friends & social activities, divorce, angry outbursts, tobacco use, alcohol abuse and drug abuse.

I think by now, at least I hope, you see the writing on the wall here that Chronic Stress causes a host of problems throughout your entire body and must be addressed through practices that can calm your body and mind and bring them back into equilibrium on a regular basis.
