ROOT CHAKRA
Grounded Safe Strong
The root chakra is associated with feeling grounded, safe and strong in your body and on the earth both physically and mentally. It develops when you are in the womb and up to a year old. A time when you needed to be safe and nurtured with all your needs met. The element for this chakra is earth. The root chakra wants you to learn to be fully present right here right now. If you notice, when you become extremely physical as in exercise, physical work, hard labor or even sex, your mind is able to forget about all the perceived worries you mull over day in and day out and you become fully present in your task and in your body. When you can be fully present in this moment you are more able to manifest your monetary needs in this world because you actually “do” things instead of just “thinking” about them. And because your mind is not running an endless loop of perceived worries creating undue stress and suffering. In other words you can take steps toward your goals instead of just thinking about them in your mind because your mind is now present instead of preoccupied. In being present you can also eliminate or let go of things you no longer need like negative thought patterns, bad habits and too many material things. You can't be fully present if you can't let go of the past. If you have a tendency toward hoarding, had a traumatic childhood, moved a lot, were homeless or feel as if your survival is threatened or simply have trouble manifesting you should consider working on your root chakra. This quote by tinybuddha.com sums up the root chakra quite well "Be like a tree. Stay grounded, keep growing, and know when to let go." When I visualize the Root Chakra I always think of a big oak tree. Roots stabilize and nourish huge trees. Your root chakra can stabilize and nourish you and give you the ability to grow into who you are meant to be.
As you begin working on your root chakra a simple way to start is to walk barefoot on the earth and spend time under a big tree. Practice forest therapy. Let your children run around and play barefoot! I remember running barefoot as a kid and climbing trees. Depending on your age you may have too! Today we have gotten further and further away from connecting with the earth like our ancestors did. As a result, we as a society, are stressed out, depressed or angry and plagued with anxiety. All of which can be reduced if not eliminated by grounding yourself and connecting with the earth. If you have a medical or psychological condition it is recommended that you see a licensed heath care professional. The information provided here is not intended to replace any medical care. It can work in harmony and conjunction with regular medical treatments. If you want to dive deeper into your root chakra I do offer chakra balancing and chakra classes.

Sacral Chakra
passion creativity self-worth
The sacral chakra is associated with creative instincts, passion, pleasure, emotions, trust and your self-worth. You must have a sense of self-worth to be able to express your emotions, sensuality and creative instincts. In doing so, you experience a freedom that gives you much pleasure and joy in your life. The element associated with the sacral chakra is water. Water loves to move and water is not healthy when it is stagnant. The moon also effects water. It effects the tides and it effects emotions. You are not healthy when you remain stagnant. You must flow with life and embrace change to grow and create and become wiser. Movement forward and change is what gives humanity new inventions, modern comforts and higher awareness. A healthy sacral chakra helps you embrace change with resilience, anticipation and excitement. It helps you go with the flow!
When working on your sacral chakra it’s beneficial to spend time in the moonlight and near water. Think about being near water. You are usually on vacation by an ocean, a lake, a pool or in colder climates near snow and ice, which is also water. Remember being a kid and splashing in puddles from the rain or even in the bathtub? Recall a fun time you had in water. Watch children when they are in water and learn from them. They will be moving, squealing and screaming with delight! Get outside and in some water if possible or in the tub and let the water relax and rejuvenate you so you can connect with that playful, happy and joyful part of you that can express itself freely, lovingly and happily. If you feel stuck or stagnant without joy and like you are not moving forward in life you should consider working on your sacral chakra. I do offer personal chakra sessions and classes if you want to dive deeper into your personal transformation!

solar plexus chakra
courage confidence strength
The solar plexus chakra is associated with transformation, converting your energy into action. It gives you courage to stand up for yourself your ideas and ideals. It gives you confidence to take risks and act on these ideas. And, it gives you an inner strength to see them through and face life’s challenges along the way. This quote by Einstein sums up the solar plexus chakra quite well he said “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” You need courage to try something new and enough confidence to accept failing and you need strength to learn from your mistakes and try again in a new way. Being a fire element this chakra is your source of energy. Fire transforms anything it touches. The solar plexus chakra helps us with digestion. Digestion of foods where they are transformed into muscle and physical energy for your body. Digestion of thoughts where you get ideas and overcome habits and patterns where you have allowed yourself to be defined by others like the voice of your parents in your own head or peer pressure and even societal and cultural norms. To have courage, confidence and inner strength is also considered personal power. The solar plexus chakra helps you reclaim your own personal power. Personal power is self-reliance, self-responsibility, and trusting yourself. It is having the strength to stand up for yourself, establish healthy boundaries, be assertive and stand up for what you believe in or what you feel is right. Personal power gives you freedom. It is not wielding power over someone physically or emotionally by blaming or shaming.
When working on your solar plexus chakra it is beneficial to sit in the sun, spend time by a fire or even watching the flame of a candle. As you do so, think about how you have given your power away. The first step is to take responsibility for yourself without blaming others or seeking their approval. You can then begin taking small steps to reclaim your power. Then you can build on those steps. For instance, I’ve heard so many moms blame their kids for them being overweight, myself included! When I quit blaming and realized I am responsible for what I put in my mouth I began choosing healthier foods. I began to lose weight and in the process became more confident which meant I was getting my power back! My next small step was getting more rest. I would to stay up late. I’d have some reason for it like I need to do this or that to get ready for the next day. I decided to give myself a bedtime and I stuck to it no matter what (this built up trust in myself). I was more productive & happier when I went to bed at a descent time. As a side effect, my son also became more responsible for himself because he had to make his own lunch or starve since I no longer stayed up late doing it for him. I was robbing him of learning to be responsible for himself by doing everything for him. He learned to do his own laundry next! And my next step was to take a yoga class on Saturday mornings. I’ll admit I felt a little guilt and shame at first because I wasn’t home taking care of my families every need. But it was only an hour and a half on Saturday mornings. Sometimes they were even still asleep when I got home! We, especially women, tend to take on everyone else’s responsibilities and put ourselves last. In reality we need to make a point to do things for ourselves first that way we set a good example for our kids to take care of themselves and to be responsible for their own choices and actions. When we take care of ourselves we become even better at taking care of our loved ones. What is going to be your first baby step in taking your power back?

heart chakra
love compassion forgiveness
The heart chakra is associated with love, compassion and forgiveness. It helps you be open to truly give as much as you receive and in an unconditional way without attachments and expectations. This chakra encourages openness and connection with others as well as nurturing and trusting self and others. It is here that you begin to truly love and accept yourself so you can love others without the strings of attachment. When you can truly love yourself you don’t look to others to complete you or make you happy. This quote by William Arthur Ward really sums up this chakra, “happiness is an inside job.” Remember you were learning to take responsibility for yourself and develop your personal power with the previous chakra. As we begin to nurture ourselves in the heart chakra with love, compassion and forgiveness we become much happier and the people around us will begin to change as well. There is an energy shift and we no longer attract others that want us to be responsible for their happiness. And our children learn by example, they learn to do activities that are fulfilling to them instead of looking to you for every little thing. Partly because you will begin to encourage it. Some relationships and friendships may fall away and others will develop a deeper bond.
When working on your heart chakra spend time in nature. I’m sure you are beginning to notice that I encourage this with every chakra. Nature is healing for us on many levels and studies have proven the health benefits which I discuss more in the healing modalities section. Sometimes it is easier to give than receive so I recommend that you begin your heart chakra healing by making a list of random acts of kindness and each day do one thing that shows kindness to a stranger. Then begin to notice when someone does something kind for you. It may be as small as a smile or holding a door. Look inside yourself and begin noticing how it makes you feel. As you feel the kindness, love and compassion, it will begin to grow inside of you, it will become contagious and begin to ripple out to others and they will pass it on to the next person and so on and on it goes. Just as a reminder, I do offer personal chakra sessions and chakra classes if you want to dive deeper into your personal transformation!

throat CHAKRA
Creative expressive communication
Now that you have learned compassion in the heart chakra you move on and upward to the throat chakra. The throat chakra teaches expressive, truthful, communication. It is here that you learn to listen with compassion from the heart and you learn to speak the truth with love and compassion. You can now communicate your feelings from the 2nd chakra and express them in healthy ways. You also begin to understand others without a need to be defensive. With the personal power you gained in the 3rd chakra and the love in your heart from the 4th chakra you begin to feel confident in expressing yourself as well as developing and sharing your creative talents with the world. The throat chakra helps reconnect you to your true nature, your inner child. It helps you feel confident and safe enough to express yourself in the world in healthy, fun and energetic ways without the worry of criticism and judgement. When this energy can move you feel energized and more alive!
As you begin to work on your throat chakra get outside and under the blue sky. Ether is the element for this chakra. Ether fills all the spaces around us. A good example of ether can be found in the art of Vincent van Gogh. He captures it so profoundly in his famous painting called The Starry Night. It is also known that he loved to spend a lot of time in nature. You need to dive into your creativity in this chakra. You can begin by singing out loud. If you are really timid to sing out loud start by singing in the car or in the shower where no one can hear you. You can be silly and sing with your kids or nieces and nephews. You can learn a lot from children. They love to sing and dance and do this uninhibited as if no one is watching! Life is much more fun when you jump in and participate. I know you must have, at one time or another, wished you were joining in the fun instead of sitting on the side lines. You can be creative in many ways including cooking, drawing, painting or playing an instrument to name just a few. Just do it! No one has to see it or hear it. But you need to do it and experience how you feel when you can do something creative without worry of judgement. It is the doing that is important not the outcome. As you become more in touch with your creativity you will feel happier and more energetic. You will be able to speak your truth with love and compassion and share your creative talents with others. Who knows, you may soon find your purpose and create for the benefit of all!

THird eye CHAKRA
focus intuition wisdom
Thanks to Melissa Askew for sharing their work on Unsplash.
This is the space where you quiet your mind. You quiet the egoic part of yourself and look inward. Where you tap into your subconscious mind for guidance and clarity without the drama of your conscious mind or egoic self. It is a quiet space where you tap into your inner wisdom and your intuition. A place where you can focus on what really matters in life like the growth of your soul so you can transcend unhealthy patterns that keep you stuck on that hamster wheel. It is where you develop your intuition, your inner knowing and inner guidance. Where your thought processes become clear and where you can focus on the big picture of life and connect with your true purpose.
As you begin to work on your third eye chakra go outside and stargaze at night. Tap into the part of you that can watch and observe your thoughts without getting caught up in them. Be the observer. It is also wonderful to get out in the daytime and let the sun shine on your third eye chakra. (with your eyes closed of course.) I love to watch the sunrise in the morning while the world is still quiet. As the sun peaks I make sure to close my eyes and let it shine on my face as I begin a quick meditation or just sitting still and observing the thoughts in my mind and then quieting the thoughts that like to draw me in by bringing my awareness back to the present moment of the early morning sunrise and listening to the insects, birds, animals and the breeze. All things that bring you back to the present moment and still your mind, still those analytical and wandering thoughts. The goal is for you to control your mind, not for the mind to control you. Sometimes your mind can make life seem uncomfortable or scary and dark but if you can still your mind your inner eye will adjust to the dark just like your eyes do and you can see with clarity again. You can always regain your focus by tapping into your inner guidance, your inner knowing, your sixth chakra or sixth sense. The more you practice the easier it is.

crown CHAKRA
Receptive spiritual connection
Now that you are developing your intuition and tapping into your subconscious mind for clarity and guidance through your third eye chakra you can now move onward and upward to your Crown Chakra. This is your receptive spiritual connection with the Divine, God, Source, or Universal Intelligence. This is where you feel connected with all and where you are receptive to spiritual guidance. The element for this chakra is thought. Not egoic thought but divine thought. Is it no wonder that you must work on your third eye chakra before moving on to your crown chakra. You have to get those thoughts under control in order to have that clear spiritual connection with the divine. The crown chakra is where you feel connected to all... To the earth, the animals and all creatures on earth, to humankind, and to God, Source, Universal Intelligence. The more you feel connected the more you want to do work that serves others, serves the earth and serves god. We serve our creator by being creative and sharing our creative abilities, ideas and talents that in turn helps others feel more connected. By connecting with the Divine you become more empowered each day with the endless abundance to be yourself, to follow your destiny... Serving humanity with the endless abundance of your successes, your creative ideas and your love and acceptance of yourself and others. Always connected and resonating with the Earth and with the Divine. Your receptive spiritual connection to all. By developing your crown chakra you become part of something bigger.
As you begin working on your crown chakra do one thing everyday that brings you joy and makes you feel connected with others and the earth. Go out into the quiet solitude of nature. Practice Forest Therapy go on nature walks or go for a hike in the mountains. Be quiet and tune in to nature, quiet your thoughts and try to be fully present and connected with your surroundings. Notice the beauty all around you and let the sounds of nature be your music. Listen to the insects, the animals, the birds, and the breeze and the sound of the breeze as it moves through the trees, the leaves, and the brush. It is quite beautiful. And take the time to thank Mother Earth for all she does for us. Talk to your angels, god, your spiritual guides, your guardian angel and the arch angels. Then be quiet and listen to the intuitions and messages you receive back. It may even be a picture that flashes in your mind, a quick thought, a feeling or an inner knowing. Sometimes you are given clues and signs that you may have to decipher until your connection becomes stronger. You may see a particular animal that stands out to you for some reason. Look it up and see what it means as a spirit animal. Remember to ask "What is my next step?" The more you practice being connected, the more receptive you will become. Just like developing a muscle. The more and more you work it the stronger it gets. I personally feel like my messages come in three's. I'll get three different signs or messages that are all about the same thing. For example, I may get an intuition to do something then a friend will say "I read about this, what do you think" and it is the same thing that was in my intuition, then I turn on the TV or open a book and it will somehow be about the same thing again. Then I know I need to follow through or look into it. This receptive spiritual connection is different for everyone, maybe I'm just hard headed and my angels have to work three times as hard to get through to me!!!
